FE underhood clearance...

Can some of you guys with the FE's tell me what kind of underhood clearance you have from the top of the aircleaner to the bottom of the hood? The reason is I'd like to get a street version without the hood scoop. But I'm building a 427 tunnelport with a 2x4 intake and I'm concerned it won't fit under the flat hood. I'll use a SC hood with the scoop if needed but hoping to get away with the flat hood if possible. Another concern is the undercar exhaust will choke the performance of the tunnelport. So I'm a little undecided between the street version with undercar exhaust and the SC with the sidepipes. I do like the clean look of the street car tho.  I guess I could use a hood scoop and run sidepipes and keep the rest like the street version?? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

G.

Hey G,

I have a K&N 9" extreme top filter on a Edelbrock performer rpm topped with a single 4150 series Holley.  If you can compare the height of the dual 4s on the tunnel, with a single four on the eddy rpm, I might be able to help.  I have one of the oval cobra filters that I can put on to get an idea where the front might land.  I also think there are a few 4x2 set ups already on the road, so they might be able to help too.

Brad thanks for the reply. I'm down in Ga until next Monday when I return to Ct. I'll take some measurements of the intake when I get home. I don't have carbs or a aircleaner yet but I'm sure we can figure pretty close by the intake height. I'll see if i can borrow a carb in the meantime. I might even have a old holley 4bbl kickin around...I'll see when I get home. Thanks for your help!

Brad the Tunnelport intake height measures 2" in the front to 3 3/4" back. Measurements are taken from the base of the valve cover rail to the top of the carb pads. It looks to be close in size to an old tunnelwedge I had. These are bare intake measurements...no carbs or aircleaner.

Thanks,

Glenn.

PS thanks for the expansion tank measurements you posted on CC. I'll need to shorten mine 1" or so...

Are the tank measurements specific to a Hurricane? Can you share the link or some of the keywords for this: maybe the name you posted under.

I've been looking for info on if it is necessary to modify my puke tank (FE Block - Hurricane kit) but haven't been able to find anything yet

Thanks

Hey Paul, Brad posted this info over at CC in the FE forum. It's the surge tank thread I beleive. And yes it did pertain to the Hurricane kit. Brad posts under "Burgs" and I'm the same there FFR428.  Dove makes a shortened aluminum tank and both Gessford and Southern automotive sell a shorter brass and stainless tank.

Paul,

The expansion tank,...With the cap on, from the center of the top bolt, to the top of the cap, it is 6",... that's the best I can get with it mounted on the engine.  I have a little less than an inch clearance.

Glen,

I'm not sure where your measurements are from, or how I can relate them to my single 4v, but I'll see what I can come up with this weekend.  I'm leaving town soon, but I'll be back.  :)

Brad sorry I should have been clearer. The measurements were taken looking at the side of the intake. From where the top edge of the VC sits on the intake to the base of the front and rear carb pads. So looking from the side of the intake the top of the front carb pad is 2" tall from the edge of the VC and the rear carb pad is 3 3/4" tall. This is not much higher than the MR 2x4 and the tunnel wedge's. So I'm hoping for the best. Thanks and U da man!!! I can send you some pics if that will help explain things.

I understand your measurements, but don't know how I can compare them to my single 4V setup.

k_bisconti, has this setup and might be able to help more.

Thanks Brad I'll look him up and see what he can tell me.

Thanks!
