General Information / Re: arch or no arch

QuoteTodd B?? Is that you?? I'm in the same boat. I'm more than ready to order but I'm waiting until more info on these new laws come out. No way a 427 FE with dual carbs is going to pass anything around here. I'd hate to build a car I could never legally register.

There is a thread on Club Cobra with some important info about the up coming hearing we should all attend. It's posted in the registration forum. We are trying to join forces with the another kit car club (4C's) who seems pretty up on the current events. Power in numbers brother please read it and invite anyone you can. It's also posted on the FFR site.

We've never met... I just know you from the FFcobra forum. I'm friends with Mike Zombar and Rob Dembosky. I think you know those guys.

Anyhoo the street car is my choice. I've been looking into some oval exhaust options from Dr Gas that might help on ground clearnace.

Glenn.

You've blown my cover.   :'(   Yup, I know Mike and Rob.

Thanks for heads up on PHP5790. If this doesn't pass, it will certainly impact my plans for the next project.  I sent a letter last night to my rep and will keep an eye out for any gatherings.  Let me know if you hear.

I hope my post isn't taken the wrong way.  Just another observation with respect to capturing the beauty of the car which they've done quite well. I'm very impressed with their response to these types of details and their progress.  I wish you well!

QuoteAre you asking if the rocker panel contour on the Hurricane matches the original?  Looking at the Street Hurricane pictures it appears to be a little straighter from front to back than the originals which seem to have some compound curve in that area.  But, short of an original body it sure looks nice.

Dan

No, I'm not asking that.  I know it doesn't match the original and YES that body is sweet.  This will very likely be my next project.  I know it sounds stupid but it's the ONLY thing that bothers me about the look.  I know that's crazy but I guess we all have our ticks.  If I can't live with it, I'll fab the panel in.

CT is getting pretty tough on composite vehicle emissions so I'm trying to figure out what I would do for a mill.  I really want a Street HMS with a 392W carb but I don't think it will fly here in CT.  I'll move before I have to put an air pump on my Cobra.   >:(

Here's a great article on what you can do with a  small block with little effort.  I've run a stock 5.0, thee 351Ws and now a 392W stroker in my FFR.  The three 351s were a disaster from a turn-key supplier.  It should have only been one but had many problems.  The FMS 392W @ 430HP  is an incredible engine.  Very streetable and if you'd like more, then slap on the Z heads or AFR 185s and get to the 500HP league. A really good breathing stock cam would get you a terrific driver.  You may lose a little top end HP with the stock cam but you'll be more than happy with the torque at the low end.

General Information / Re: who's wheels

Look closer.  Not a dead match.  I believe these are Image Wheels not Panasport.  The lugs in the pic pass right through the spoke which join closer to the center than Panasports.   Here are the Image Wheels.

Team III also makes a similar Superlite clone that I've been looking at for my current ride.

Ron,

There are two types of wheels discussed here.  One is a single piece cast aluminum type below.   The original cars ran these types of wheels (but magnesium).  The outside rim was polished and the hub was left rough cast.  The same wheel is being offered by Hurricane has a more finished center section which is either painted or caoted. I'm not sure which but regardless it can be painted any color you wish.
A finished center like this makes cleaning and maintenance MUCH MUCH easier.

The other type is a more economical type stamped steel chrome 5 bolt wheel (below) that has a plastic center hub cap type cosmetic cover (which looks darn good BTW).  The plastic center cannot be powdercoated but can also be painted any color you wish.  The paint these days holds up real well even out of a rattle can.  The wheel underneath would start by looking somehting like this first pic below.  Then add the hub in the center for the finished product in the bottom pic.

You can paint the center section of either wheel.  The original style wheel on the left looks to be Vintage Wheels.  The center section on those come painted (or powder coated) that color instead of natural cast.  Paint them any color you wish.

Build it and they will come....   8-)  One of my favorite 289s .  ERA I think.  Notice the slight radius on the bottom sill between the front and rear wheels.

Was just cruising through the archives and noticed a thread that mentioned a 289 FIA car is under development.  Any more on this and when it might be available?

Thanks all for the replys.  I like the hybrid ideas and will most likely be going this route.  Street dash with glove, heater/defroster,    top, hoops front and rear, and the rest S/C with carbed 392W.   I'll be driving the car MUCH.

it also eliminates squeaks and rattles and makes the body more rigid.

Jim

Jim,

Not that it won't happen as time goes by, I hope not, but right now my car is tight, with no squeeks or rattles.  I am very impressed with how solid it is.   [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

Brad

This is really good to hear.  I've got 40,000 miles on my current ride in as many years and not a single squeek or rattle.  That would drive me nuts.

Brad,

Your car is GORGEOUS.  I can only hope mine turns out as well.  I was really hoping that FFR would come around and get the body right but it doesn't look like it will happen.  I really like everything else about the comapny and product but I want something more true to the original look without having to sacrifice performance and that won't break me.

I like what I've seen so far of Hurricane and will be looking to see a car or build in progress up close.   I can't make up my mind to go Roadster or Street but here are a couple of more questions for the crowd...

1.  Is the trunk area sealed and waterproof?

2.  How are the door sills finished where the body meets the doors?  ( I had seen 66rdster adding door sills in his build pics.  That scares me as I'm not experienced in body work)

3.  Is there a soft top available with side curtains?

Thanks
Todd

Here's a picture of what I was trying to describe...

It's no big deal as long as I know I can work them to being level.

As the primaries exit the body, if the outside set of primaries followed the same radius as the inside, it would close the gap and make the turn a bit smoother like the original.

General Information / side pipes?
October 25, 2006, 07:24:07 PM
I'm a newbee to Hurricane scene and will be selling my beloved FFR to start a new project.  I'm truly impressed with the attention to feedback as it relates to improving the details of being true to the original shape of the car.  That being said, the side pipes are the only component that gives me reservation.  The 90 degree collector exiting the body seems too sharp and the the pipe seems to angle up at the tip out too much.  I'd really like to see the pipes developed to look like the ones in the pic below.  Any thoughts on revisions in the future?
