How Loud?

I know, it depends on the engine, right?
If you go to the FFR forum there are tons of threads dealing with how to quiet down the side pipes so you don't go deaf.

I have a Jeep, so I understand road noise and open cockpit driving.  I'm fine with that, but I don't want to need ear plugs while driving my car.  I want to be able to hear the sirens as well as see the flashing lights behind me  ;)

So what's the deal?  Do you need to modify the pipes or do they do a good job as is?
Thanks,
Doug

Hey Doug
I know you said it but it really does depend on what engine, compression, cam, induction, driver etc, as to how loud it is.
Granted, it's not going to be quiet with any set up but I didn't want a Lexus.
This is a toy and I want it to be mean, menacing and alive... spitting out colossal sounds... (someone stop me!!) the whole thing shaking at the stop light, sounding like rolling thunder!...(gasp!)... A true ground-pounder!!

Whew...I need a cigarette! :o

What Larry said.

I just sold a Cobra with a 12.5:1 289.  My Hurricane has a 9.8:1 428.  The 289 was L-O-U-D!  The 428 is actually too quiet for my tastes.  Both had the same sidepipes.

Tom,
I wonder if the difference in miles between the cars has anything to do with it. Maybe yours will get louder as the miles pile up. Your SV is definately loud. I want mine to be just as loud so I can pizz off the neighbor. ;D

Take care, Jim

Hey Doug,
The motor I built for my car is a 10:1 347 stroker with an x-303 cam. Its quieter that I thought it would be. I can talk to the passenger without having to scream. The sound IMO is perfect.

How radical is that cam? Does it idle easily?
I like the grind and it's one of the cams I may be looking at more closely.

Hey Larry,
After reading my post. I posted the wrong cam. Its the Z-303.
Its the most radical cam they make for the 5.0L 302. It has a 290 deg duration and .552" lift.
Very..Very little knowledge I have in the timming department. The closest I can get it is 25 deg TDC. Again, I am clueless in this department.
Also, It does not idle easy...It shakes, rattles and rolls....My Wife say's it sounds like its gonna shut off... ;D
