Well I have been dinking around quite a bit waiting for the Sti to sell (which it finally did) so the real fun could begin.

Looks Excellent Dan. KC builds some great engines. I think your gonna like the 408. It's a great choice.

The porting is beautiful Dan! Almost hate to put an intake on it!
Looks real nice.

Dan, looks great. I noticed you're running AFR heads. You may well have a problem with the header matchup with the exhaust ports on the heads. The AFR heads have much larger ports than the standard 351w headers. Both Lou Nixon and I ended up buying new header flanges and are having Hurricane MS weld up new headers.

Yep the ports are too big for the header.  Where did you buy the flange?

Dan, I got the flanges from Stahl Headers
http://www.stahlheaders.com/flanges_main.htm
I forget which set I got, but I worked with one of the tech guys there and set me up with a set of flanges that were actually a little larger than the ports on the heads, yet would still work with 1 3/4" header tubes and use the 3" header bolt holes on the heads. I know the port size of the flanges were 1.6"x1.9". You also have to use the Flexpro 1487 or equivalent header gasket.
BTW, my engine builder strongly recommended using header studs ont he AFR heads.

It's a tough call for me.  I already have my headers ceramic coated.  It will cost me about $400 or more to get a new set done and coated.   So I am thinking that money is not worth the 20hp or so I would lose due to the restrictions.  The ports are not that much bigger and I bet I could trim it down some to ease the flow.

Actually, Dan looking at the 205 header gaskets fel pro # 1487 they measure 1.42x1.62 our 351 headers are stock port, 1.12 x1.48. To me this means the bolt pattern on the 205 heads has to be wider. Meaning the flange will have to be changed. I am in the same boat as I am doing the KC 427w. with 205 heads.

MFE III

Actually, you don't have to change the flanges. The AFR heads come with two sets of header bolt holes. The standard, narrow ones to match regular 351W heads and the wider bore (I think 3") ones you see on the Felpro 1487.
I gotta say that I got my set back from HM with the new Stahl flanges and Jason did a beautiful job, nicely ported and all!

Matt , Yes the heads do have different bolt patterns but I know the 205 heads I have looked at the ports are 1.42" wide and the distance between the bolt holes from the port to the inner edge of the bolt holes on our headers is 1.525". That would

MFE III

I agree. That's why I opted for the new flanges!

Dan I was just wondering how your headers matched up with your afr 205.  I am in the  same boat as you with stock exhuast flange.  What gasket did you go with?  I was hoping to have mine running by now.  Waiting on cusomt length push rods to come in.  Any help would be great.  Darren

Here's a pic of my headers with Stahl flanges that match the 205 heads compared to the head gasket that fits the standard heads/headers. You'll see the difference is pretty big. I think you'd experience big back pressure and hp loss running the standard small port headers on the AFR 205s.
