take a look @ this engine and let me know what you think
250 hp
350 ft/lbs

$2895

This is the engine I had originally looked at and had planned to use. It is the best value for the $ I found. However, I did not go with this. My reasoning was that for the longer term, if I decided to sell the car, I felt for the overall $ that would be invested in the car it would be better to upgrade the engine, so I'm using a 351W bored and stroked to 392 with alum heads, manifold, etc. This path will about double the cost of the engine you are looking at, but as with everything it's a matter of personal choice and what you want in the car. There are other choices that would fall in between as well. My 2 cents worth.

I agree that the FRPP 351 is as good as it gets for us budget-minded folks.  Actually, even though I am running an FE, I think the 351-W based engines are the best things for these cars unless you have unlimited funds and can put a new injected MOD engine in it.

bh,

I am not sure you would be happy with that motor.  250HP is actually enough to make a light car like this fun to drive, but I'm not sure the characteristics of that engine will be suitable.

If you look at the description, you will see the engine makes peak power at 3,800 RPM.  That is a truck engine.  It is intended for someone who is re-powering an old pickup truck.  The driving characteristics will be those of a truck engine: lots of torque right off idle, but the engine will fall flat on it's face at 4,000 RPM when you try to rev it out.  You may not find that very enjoyable in a sports car.

Since that engine is basically just a stock 351 truck engine anyway, I would look at buying a used 351 engine with good compression.  Get a set of inexpensive aluminum heads like the Edelbrock Performers, an Edelbrock Performer manifold, and a better cam for it.

You will have spent only slightly more than the new truck motor, but you will have something with much better driving characteristics as well as more power.

Something to think about,

Kevin

Kevin is right. I posted this on the owners side of the forum but since you can't see that side, here's my post.

"As far as the motor goes, a 351W is a perfect choice. I prefer to build my own motors. A standard bore, 9.5 to 1 CR, 351W with Edelbrock RPM heads, cam and intake puts out 415 HP & 415 TQ and is actually a very mild motor. Mine is .30 over, fully balanced and I'm into it about $4000 including carb. and MSD dist, 6al box, wires, aluminum water pump, Canton oil pan and all the rest of the little stuff. "

Since I get little to no traction running the above motor, anything more just adds to your maintainance problems and makes it more difficult to drive in traffic.

Jim's comment about not being able to get traction is a good point.

I have an article I wrote for the FAQs section of another forum that explains the interrelationship between engine torque, transmission gearing and ring & pinion gearing to maximize acceleration without exceeding the tires limits.

It is probably more information than most people want and it is fairly long, so I won't post it here. (Unless there is significant interest.)   Anyone who would like a copy can send me an e-mail and I will attach it to the reply.  Please put the word "Cobra" somewhere in the subject line so your e-mail doesn't get deleted as spam.
