General Questions / Re: Noisy swedge tubes...(trailing arms)

I have HM2029 and I had the same noise at about that mileage. I spun the heims so I could get grease into the heim joint. The noise is gone the joints were a little galled and locking up. Winter project, see if I can drill the heim, joints for a zirk fitting or replace them with a new heim with a zirk, Pete.

Why?  This is going to cause all sorts of problems. Greasing Heims will cause the ball to really wear out as it attracts sand and dust and acts as sandpaper to that joint.  Just replace the heim's with the above part numbers and your problems will go away.  I ended up replacing all the front end heim's this summer as those developed the same noise as the rears.  The fronts are different part numbers through FK.

The ultimate cause of the creaking was the QA1 rod end bearings.  The supplied bearing have a plastic insert in them that is not up to the loads that exist in the rear end of our cars.  They all started making noise within 10 miles and it was bad enough that I could see witness marks on the ball in the rod end.  Upgrading the rod ends in the trailing arms to FK bearing JMX10T and JMXL10T rod ends absolutely eliminated the problem.  Those bearings are three piece and have a teflon liner in them.  They are also of much more stout construction than the plastic insert QA1 stuff.  New owners...upgrade the kits with these parts!

For anyone wondering this is the IDENTICAL heater that is used in our Hurricane's.  I installed one in mine and it is a great unit.

General Questions / Shout out to the Hurricane boys...
« on: December 13, 2022, 10:52:02 PM »
I just want to put a thank you out to the Hurricane boys for continuing to stand by their product in providing customer service and continued support as the company goes through this transition time.  Some know, I've been working through some significant issues with my car which the guys at Hurricane continue to assist me with and have worked to resolve in a fair manner.
My car is currently in for paint and I am looking forward to having it on the road this summer with all the bugs worked out.  I'll update with pictures once I get them from the paint shop.

I recommend a switch under the dash that supplies power to the in-tank fuel pump so you can turn off the fuel pump if the car is parked.  Effective disabling device for anti-theft.  My car is EFI so I installed a relay in the trunk for the fuel pump and made a switch in front of the steering column that shuts off power to that circuit.  Works slick.  I also use a battery switch (big red switch) on the back of the cockpit that runs wiring through it for the park/neutral safety switch.  Both of these are disabling devices for anti-theft.

Mike!  She's an absolutely beautiful beast!  Congratulations on being finished.  I am not far behind.  I'm in for paint right now-I'll have finished pics by spring (hopefully).  Enjoy driving that thing.  The fact you painted it yourself is truly impressive and what a fine job you did!

General Questions / Re: Hood Clearance

I was unable to fit mine without the hood scoop.  I have a Smeding 427W with a Victor Jr. intake manifold in my car.  It sits high of the hood by about an inch.

I went with the standards.  I have tried everything to get the noise to go away.  The car is at a weld shop in northern MN getting some brackets re-welded for the third link.  When they were originally welded the third link bracket on the axle was no where near parallel to the third link bracket on the frame causing a bind...which is making my noise.  Brackets are being cut, aligned and re-welded.

I ordered new Swedge tubes from a different supplier (Speedway Motors).  When I pull the old one off I will take a peek inside and see if I can see anything.  I'll replace these tonight and let y'all know tomorrow.

General Questions / Noisy swedge tubes...(trailing arms)
« on: August 02, 2022, 03:09:16 PM »
Has anyone had any issues develop with clunking/creaking in the trailing arm swedge tubes?  I put about 500 miles on my car and developed a clunking/creaking/rattle noise that I isolated to what I thought were rod ends on the passenger side trailing arm.  I ordered new QA1 rod ends, installed them and the problem went away.  About 500 miles later the exact noise started up again.  If I push the car up and down I can hear and feel the nose in the trailing arm on the passenger side of the car.  I called QA1 and sent them a video of the noise and they said; "Hmmm we've never heard that before." and then proceeded to send me all new replacement rod ends as well as several other sets/styles to try (probably worth about $200 total-very good customer service.)  I haven't installed them yet as I am not convinced the rod ends are the problem.  If I have someone push the car up and down and I put my hands on the rod ends I feel nothing but hear the clunk.  If I have someone push the car up and down and I grab the swedge tube (trailing arm) I hear and feel the clunk.  I jacked the car up...put a rubber hammer to the rod ends...no noise.  Put the same advanced diagnostic tool to the swedge tube and it rattles...even with the lock nuts tightened down.  Does anyone have an explanation for this?

General Questions / Re: Fuel odor in trunk

are you sure its not the tank vent of the other side?   Are the walls on the driver side sealed to the body?

Definitely not the vent.  That is well sealed from the trunk…

Aaron,

If you have this hose from Tanks, https://www.tanksinc.com/index.cfm/page/ptype=product/product_id=867/category_id=200/mode=prod/prd867.htm
It is only rated to SAE 30R7, it will allow much more permeation than a marine rated fuel hose that is certified to SAE J1527.
Permeation rate standard for each hose type: 30R7 allows 550g/m2/day vs 15g/m2 to 300g/m2 /day for J1527 depending on application and designation (A2 or A1-15.
You might be better off with this hose possibly: https://www.fillernecksupply.com/2-inch-soft-wall-rubber-fuel-filler-neck-hose-sold-per-inch-saej1527-rswff2/

My trunk is entirely sealed from the outside environment. However I have noticed a fuel odor when I open up the trunk. It is most definitely coming from the inlet pipe. I have tried three different set ups to try to seal the vapor off at this area. I am currently using a sealed hose similar to that for marine applications from tanks Inc. along with T-bolt clamps To secure it.

That has to be it.  I’ll upgrade the hose and report back.  Thanks for the links!

I have tried three different set ups to try to seal the vapor off at this area. I am currently using a sealed hose similar to that for marine applications from tanks Inc. along with T-bolt clamps To secure it.  Took it out for a drive tonight and noticed that I still have fuel vapor when I open the trunk. It is not coming from the fuel pump area or the fuel sending unit as I have inspected those.  The smell is strongest at the hose.  I am wondering what you guys are using in this area?  This is my set up:
