Title: Gas pedal feel...
Post by: aarvig on January 22, 2021, 11:25:25 PM
Anyone install a return spring on the gas pedal (in addition to the carb) to help increase pedal pressure?  If so, could someone post a picture of their set-up?

This one has been on my mind for some time. My thought was I did not want the gas pedal to just rely on the throttle linkage spring on the carb and the secondary springs typically added to also carry the weight of the pedal. I thought some sort of torsion spring was needed to carry or at least help the pedal we have.
Today, I was rummaging thru some old hardware I had laying around and found some paper clip cotter pins we used from our kart racing days. Here was the opportunity to test this idea. I modified it slightly and increased the angle between the legs. Surprisingly it worked. Pics and vid below.
The inner diameter was slightly larger than 3/8". I found another stock torsion spring online that has a larger inner diameter .812" to go outside of the 3/4" tube, a little larger diameter wire, a couple more windings, longer legs at 90 degrees to each other so I can form the "J" hook for the pedal arm. Should be a bit stronger torque wise and not as soft I think. Will see after the new spring arrives.

Received the new spring with .090 wire, larger diameter to fit the 3/4" tube and a few more coils. Bent up the one the leg to attach to the pedal arm. Also added a 1/4" spacer, I think the spring worked better with the spacer. After the pics taken I also cut the longer leg down about half. Spring definitely has more torque than the small one I had on last time
With the length and leverage of the pedal, it doesn't feel like any added effort, but it does bring the pedal back up more than the smaller spring. I'll probably tweek it a little bit and leave it in place so the pedal return doesn't just rely on the carb springs.
