Greetings all. I purchased and ordered my car in April. Needless to say, with the news of late and my car yet to be delivered I've been concerned. Jake has been great reassuring me, and I'm expecting my car sometime in October. Jake has been very ģood responding to my questions, especially since the news broke. I just look forward to getting my car and starting the build process. While this is my first Cobra, it is far from my first build. Look for "Bass and Hot Rods" on YouTube. I'd love to hear from you. Also: anyone in north Texas have a body buck I can get some measurements off of? I will be needing it soon and would like to have ir ready when the car arrives.
-
Hey Larry,
Here is the body buck drawing courtesy of Paul P.
-
Awesome. Thanks!
-
Welcome! There are a few of us Hurricane builder / owners here in north Texas: Midlothian, Ennis, Granbury, McKinney, that I can think of. Let us know if you need any help!
-
I wi certainly do that! Would love to meet up with you guys. I'm in McKinney also
-
Welcome to the board and family Larry.
Looks like you bought it as a roller, "turn key minus" I think it's called?
Did you build the engine?
Yes Jake has been very good with tying up the loose ends for hurricane.
-
It is a stage one. Originally it was a builder but this stage one chassis came available and Alec and I cut a deal. I will ne doing most of the work. I have several other cars building right now but this is my first Cobra
-
Welcome to the forum, Larry! I also live in McKinney. I am nearing completion on my yellow HM-2032. I see from YouTube that you also like yellow. Let me know if you ever need a hand with your build and I will try to help. HM-2032 is my first build and I enjoy the process even with a sub-par manual.
I have a pretty nice chassis dolly if you need it.
Jim
-
Jim that would be awesome. Also I'd love to see your car sometime.
-
Had a great conversation with Jake today. What a good, stand up guy. Hopefully next week the headers and exhaust will be done. He is bonding panels and other work. We finalized the order and are hopefully getting close to shipping. Very excited.
-
I started a build series on my car, but will also post pics here
https://youtu.be/QsJn__W43zY
-
I checked out your video, lovely looking motor!
You mentioned not having anything else to do prior to getting your kit...and I thought to share some of my experience that I did mention some in my posts. If you are trying to get the build done more quickly than slowly, you could contemplate the following:
Wheels and tires - I only needed to build for a couple weeks before I was ready to put mine on.
Coolant reservoir/coolant pipe filler neck/coolant hoses
Engine oil cooler?
Alternative interior details, such as doing something fancy with the dash
Bolts! Motor mounts, trans mount, rear axle t-bolts for the brake backing plates, Bellhousing/trans bolts, starter bolts
Pulleys and belt and accessories (I'm about to install a CVF Serpentine kit, Alternator only)
Fuel pump
Cooling mat stuff
Driveshaft safety hoop
Pre-read the manual
Let me know if you want to discuss stuff in private.
-
Yes sir, most of that stuff is already in the works. I'm trying to decide on Sniper vs Carb. I've used the sniper on one of my other projects and like it, but I'm sort of wanting a simpler build on this one. Already have wheels and tires, and my brother does incredible custom interiors so that isn't a problem. I have the CVF pulleys and alternator mount ordered. The other stuff I can get as needed as I have a Summit Racing store within driving distance of my house
-
What is the ETA on your kit? And did you get a manual yet? If you want I can run off a black and white copy for you.
-
Glad to see you guys are making some videos to watch.
Just a heads up with Stewart transport, they were excellent however I had to wait a month I think it was between when the car was done at hurricane and when they were able to get a load scheduled. That was with them knowing about 3 months ahead of time. I'm not faulting them, just trying to prepare you in case you have to wait as well.
Also, if you aren't doing the aluminum on the firewall you could get some fiberglass supplies because the firewall needs smoothed up if you're just going to paint it.
-

I haven't gotten the manual yet so that would be great. Jake said "early to mid October so we will see I guess. And yeah Stewart did say it may take a "few weeks". I've toyed with just going to get it but it is pretty far.
-
If you PM me an address I’ll get a copy into the mail for you. With the lengthy delay in my kit, I had asked Alec to send out the manual, that took about two months. It was nice to pre-read the manual, though in truth, the manual is outdated. For instance, it shows a completely different fuel tank that requires some custom work, but the actual fuel tank that came was ready to drop in with no fab.
On second thought, I can probably just scan the manual at home, and email it to you.
It took about a month for Stewart to be ready to ship my kit. I also considered flying out and doing a one way uhaul rental, it would have been cheaper, but also with uncertainty and risks on the road. Much farther for me than you.
-
Well I finally decided on a fuel system.
https://youtu.be/6QCyWl_bO8o
-
Looks great! I’m sure it’s going to run very very beautifully.
What’s the displacement on your Stroker motor?
-
It is a 393

You can take that manual and toss it for all its worth. Better off digging through the forum for guidance :(
-
Well, doing what I can as I wait for delivery
https://youtu.be/PyqHzNssj2M
-
Nice to see you are doing a street car. My choice as well. I was very pleased with the under car exhaust Hurricane made for mine.
-
I must be living right. The Cobra fuel system for the Edelbrock Pro-Flo 4 was going to be $500. On a whim I went to the Summit outlet and found the exact system I needed, open box, $250. SCORE
-
Love it when that happens! Going to be a great looking intake setup!
-
Continuing to do things while waiting for my car. My spinners were natural, as the polished ones had a substantial backorder. My wife bought me a bench polisher for my birthday, so a little before and after
-
Those wheels are going to look great! Happy Birthday and Kudo's to your wife who obviously knows how to gift car nut.
Jim

Jim
Thanks Jim. Spoke with Jake today. The headers for the undercar exhaust have been the hang up, but he said my frame should be back to Hurricane Friday, so we may be getting close!
-
More pics of my car, soon on the way to me
-
Looks real nice. Curious to see more pics of the exhaust. On mine they used a cherry bomb type round muffler with 2.5" pipes. Took them a while to make and fit it. After a few tries they came up with a good plan. Hope it's on the way to you soon.
-
They used the same on mine. A windsor based engine sounds good with those so I was cool with that. I'll send more pics when it arrives.

Looking forward to you starting your build!

Any updates for us?
-
Any updates for us?
None yet other than Jake has only a few things to do, and Stewart Transport said it would be after the holidays for a January delivery. Anxiously waiting
-
As I patiently await the shipment of my car, I'm doing other builds. While not a cobra, my other current build just taught me how to paint, so no need to pay someone 10 grand, as I'm going to attempt it myself. Here is my first paint attempt.
https://youtu.be/Tz8Ap0ZuNOw
-
Spoke with Jake today. Only a few items are left to receive, such qs headlight buckets and trim rings, but MY CAR IS READY TO SHIP!!
Now to motivate Stewart Transport.
-
Thats great news! I'd consider having it shipped asap and wait on parts later, especially if they are body related. And if theres a month lead time for Stewart, then maybe the parts will arrive in time for shipping. Either way, looking forward to seeing your build.
-
Well, Stewart Transport is paid and allegedly is at Hurricane on Monday to pick up my car. If the weather doesn't screw me, it will be here between Tuesday and Thursday.
-
That is awesome news! Really happy for you. Sounds like they don't have too far to travel. I think my route was a week or longer.
-
Jake just sent me this!
-
More pics
-
AWESOME!!!! Really happy for you. Let the fun begin.
-
Looks awfully lonely in there, she needs some companions
-
Paul, Jake said you deal with the wiper kit and he was just going to drop ship them to me. He said he can't track them because they come from England but you may know soon. Is that correct?
-
Larry, you might look at this kit. I think it's the one some have used. https://www.affordablestreetrods.com/univ-wiper-kit-univ-street-rod-with-2-spd-rotary-s.html
Awesome news that your car is heading your way. Keep us posted.
-
I already paid for them with the kit
-
It arrived today. Now to work
-
Congratulations, I remember that day. Now begins the fun of putting it together, then taking it apart only to put it back together then second guessing yourself only to take it apart and put it back together the way you had it the first time. Good luck and enjoy the ride. Just remember it’s a marathon and not a 40 yard dash.
Michael
-
Waiting on the headlight buckets, then it will ship
Paul
-
Holy cow that was fast. I think it took Stewart 3-4 days from when they picked it up. They had a full load though and multiple deliveries.
Exciting stuff. Spot on with doing something and redoing it.
-
Nice. Glad it finally got to you! Congrats.
-
Engine and transmission in place
-
Looks nice, Larry. You are moving very fast now. Where do you plan to get your drive shaft made?
Jim
-
There is a place up on US 380 on the way to Princeton. He did the driveshaft for my F100, and it was really good quality, qnd reasonable.
-
Sorry I must have missed it, but I’m guessing the car came partially built?
-
My car was originally scheduled to be hm 2041. 2038 was q car someone ordered with a stage one chassis then ghosted, disappeared. At the last minute Alec offered me a deal on it.
-
You're moving right along already, that's great.
What are your plans for the cockpit tub? Firewall aluminum? Any heat/sound insulation?
-
I have some aluminum pieces that frankly am not sure where they go. I ordered a heaterbfrom shell valley, and plan extensive heat insulation
-
I went through the same regarding the aluminum. There are mine notated by Greg. If you still have questions, just post pics and we will figure it out.
-
That helps a lot. Thanks
-
Before and after on getting the exhaust ceracoated
-
Looks great. Nice to see how the exhaust is tucked in there.
-
That is some impressive exhaust work. Looks really good.
-
There is something oddly therapeutic about making plug wires.
Or maybe I'm just odd
-
Larry those look nice. I like how your cap is a little bigger to give you more room for the wire ends. Mine are packed pretty tight.
I like your wire holders too, I almost went with that style.
-
Driveshaft acquired. Safety loop will be here Friday
-
More little stuff. Since the video (see link) was made I did the pedal placement, driveshaft loop roughed in and built my body buck. Casters for the buck will be here tomorrow morning, and I'll get the body on it so I can start mounting the tubs.
-
You may need to trim clutch push rod with the pedal adjusted in that position. Press pedal and you'll see what I'm talking about.
-
The pedals with the "AC" look really sharp, nice touch. Did you put those on our Hurricane?
Don't trim your clutch push rod too much, the pedal travel is longer than I expected it would be. My pedal would've hit the foot box wall the way I had it initially adjusted. Luckily I had just enough length to properly adjust it.
You also might have to trim your driveshaft loop bolts off so they don't hit the trans tunnel. I have to credit Greg for giving me a heads up on that.
-
Ben, Mike Forte sells the pedals for the Wilwood assy. AC and V8 logos to choose from.
https://fortesparts.com/product/ac-pedal-pads/
Larry if these posts clog up the build thread I can delete mine. LMK
-
No you guys are just fine, I appreciate the info. Got the body in the buck today so soon I'll mount the tub and go from there.
-
Looking great! Progress is going fast.
-
Larry, why did you decide to not use the heater? Figure it'll be worthless or not enough room?
-
It will probably fit, but I just don't feel like screwing with it. It is close, and complicated under dash
-
Depending on your location, the addition of a heater will extend your driving season about two months. In Saint Louis, I am able to drive almost year-round although Jan/Feb are pretty raw. Without the heater, drives below 30 degrees get pretty chilly
Paul
-
Paul do you have pictures of your heater installed?
-
I can attest to that, close and complicated, then throw in wipers on top of all that mess it gets really tight and congested under/behind the dash.
Michael
-
Paul do you have pictures of your heater installed?
I chose to modify mine a little before I put it in. The standard ones don't have an outlet for the defroster vents so I welded a couple 2" tubes on the box before installing.
I also knew to add a hose clearance mod on the cowl upright, it is right in line with where the hose runs. This picture has the cover off the heater as I was working on some alignment issues. The 2nd picture is from my first build and shows how the hose and cowl support get in the way of each other. Allso gives you some idea of where it fits in relation to the cross tubes.
A heater can be installed after the build is complete but it would be unbelievably difficult. Better to do it before the body goes on.
-
The dash support is a little different now.
-
The dash support is a little different now.
That is the one I got. Is the spline shaft really a tight fit? Did you lube or ream it?
-
The dash support is a little different now.
Yes, it is. But if you plan to run hoses for the defroster, you still need to relocate the lower 2-1/2" of the leg. The first picture I posted was from my GenI build. This is a shot of my second car.
Note: the upper leg addition was to stabilize the forward cowl tube that serves as a mount for my hood latch brackets.
-
Larry, yes I had to ream the bronze bushing slightly to get the spline shaft to go through. I used a sanding drum on a Dremel and it worked pretty well.
Interesting Paul, I just redid my weather strip and set my tub back on. I'll have to start fitting the heater and see what all I need to do.
-
Well, more progress

Wife out of town, so I have lived in the shop this weekend
https://youtu.be/T8PdwHcL7SY
-
Larry,
How are you planning to vent the cooling system, appear to have an air pocket above filler neck and t-stat housing?
-
Still working on that. In the mock up stage. I think I'm going to do some trimming to the 90 and move the filler spout up a bit, then connect with a straight pipe that came with my kit.
-
Larry,
How are you planning to vent the cooling system, appear to have an air pocket above filler neck and t-stat housing?
Did some rearranging and it is at the high point now.
-
Larry you're really rolling along. Great videos with detail. I'm envious of how you got the heater to fit that way. I tried multiple combinations Saturday and the standard configuration is the only way that works for me. I can tell your footbox is far enough forward to make yours work in the spot you have it. You might want to drop your body on and make sure everything lines up ok. I had to shove my tub all the way to the rear to get the body to square up and my windshield squared up decent. Your body studs and upper frame might be made slightly different than mine.
-
Ran into a part issue as I'm finding things to do while waiting on a few key pieces from Hurricane. I have started preliminary work on the steering shaft, and discovered my splined shaft is NOT threaded for the 9/16 18 bolt to go in. This required me to purchase a 33/64 bit to drill it out to accept the 9/16 18 tap to create the threads (Thanks Jim for loaning me the tap and saving me the money. Tapping threads is always a bit nerve wrecking for me, but I managed to get it done.
-
Looks like you're making good progress on the body work already. Any chance you could provide measurements for the locations of the Cobra badges and wiper arms?
Are you going to add cutouts for the defrosters?
-
I will try to certainly. Pete said the location they gave him caused problems, but I may be ok..
Also, at it again
https://youtu.be/IUsiAfnYe14
-
Quite the rabbit hole, but that must have been some good momentum you had to sand the whole body down. Care to elaborate in your next video on what grit paper you used, type of sanding blocks, techniques, etc? I've followed Dan's garage building a FFR and he had some cool techniques for making soft sanding blocks that worked well with all the curves of our bodies.
-
Will do! Jim and I are off to San Marcos Thursday but I'll definitely try to address those questions.
I did the initial sand with 180 using a combo od DA with light pre, a durablock taco block, and mostly by hand and feel. Jim recommended soft sanders so I may acquire some.1
-
Looks like the pipes turned out nice. Did you happen to sit your trunk tub on with the fuel tank installed? Some (myself included) needed to shim the tank down slightly. The rubber you're going to use might do the job.
-
It actually fits well. With the weather strip it will be just right
-
Just a note for those wanting a glove box. Many kits ive seen are enormously expensive, but I picked this kit up from Shell Valley for around $135, and it fits nicely
-

I made my own for almost nothing, with materials I had around the shop. Made the box out of .062 aluminum.

Instead of the early square taillights the car came with, I filled the holes and went with the later Lucas variety. Much more better.

Separate question. Who supplied the body and frame for your 32 Ford project?
-
Show me rod and custom in Nixa Missouri. Top notch product and Tony and Cindy are great people.

Getting more work done
https://youtu.be/VdIndw7ZzfQ
-
Larry, did you Wilwood boxes from the master cylinders not have the clamps in them? Maybe Hurricane installed those so you don't have the boxes. Body work is moving along nicely. I bet that's working out well with doing the majority on the buck and being able to do it outside.
-
Yeah we have had some nice days recently, so working out in it has been a treat. Alec cut me a deal on a Stage 1 chassis that someone abandoned when I bought my car, so the MC's were installed. I did get the boxes, and the clamps were not with it. No big deal. $19 shipped and they will be here this week sometime. Jake said he was shipping the last of the aluminum pieces to me today so if I get them this week, I'll be able to set up the fuel system and mount everything under the hood. After that I start wiring. Amazing how just a few key components can put the brakes on everything.
-
I'm sure this has been covered, but just in case you didn't know, the Breeze FFR shroud fits perfectly with very little modifications. You will see mine has unfinished welds. If you buy a blemished model and state in order notes "chunky welds ok", this thing is a steal for $59.95 plus shipping.

In to stay

What gauges do you have to mount in the dash, enough clearance for them?
-
I am working with the new owners to get the correct dash for my car, which is the street gauge layout. The clearance is close but will work. The speedometer was a problem, but with the new dash it will not be, plus I'm going with a Speedhut GPS speedo, which is considerably thinner, so clearance will not be an issue.
-
Well, my NOT Hurricane took my time this weekend, and it was a successful attempt to paint a car for the first time.
https://youtu.be/bcoXTI3PNIs
-
Any updates on your Hurricane build?
-
I am on hold at the moment. The new owners are sending me the correct dash as soon as they are done. I'm about to tackle wiring and wanted the dash before this so I'm doing more work on the other project car I'm building.

Well the new owners hooked me up! The work can resume

Glad to see your back to working on the cars.
What bolts did you use on the cap? I couldn't quite tell in the video. I had to go with a countersunk head cuz the bolt heads hit when you tried to tighten down the cap.

Dash
-
Yes it does. I like your choice of hardware.
I'm still impressed you got the gauges to fit in front of the heater. Something else you may run into is getting the defroster duct to not hit the speedo. I think I'm going to have to make a spacer piece that is angled so it kicks the lower part of the defroster duct toward the front so it doesn't hit the speedo.
-
Back to work. A bit more in my comfort zone
https://youtu.be/5PnKuEpA9n8
-
Nice detailed video on the wiring. If I remember correctly I used the oil pressure wire for the oil temp sender.
Also I think I used the unlabeled red wire with an inline fuse for power to the heater switch.
Don't forget to trim the body roll/lip at the dash area. Since you're spacing the dash back some it'll probably definitely need trimmed. I'd hate to see you tear the vinyl up putting the body back on.
I thought the haywire kit was really nice. The instructions were simple but informative enough, everything was labeled nice, properly sized wires and plenty of length on everything.
You also might have a little trouble getting the VW turn signal to fit with the steering wheel since you're spacing the dash out.
-
Yep, trimming the cowl is planned. The switch fits. Tested it today.
-
Got the glove box mount figured out

Very pleased with how this turned out

Larry, sorry for the unfortunate mistake with the 32, but glad you could demonstrate the importance of some sort of circuit protection on these vehicles, esp ones with remote mounted batteries with long power cable runs. I put a circuit breaker on mine.

I know the feeling Larry. My panels had scribe marks that ended up being really close to what needed trimmed.
The hood hinges are a real blast to get up in there aren't they.

The hood is a mile off for sure. The deck lid is a little closer. The doors are their own issue.
-
Saw your wiper video. Not sure if you're running defrosters since you're have the heater but didn't forget those. I haven't cut mine in yet, driver's side looks like it'll will be quite interesting to fit in there with all the gauges and wiring. I'll more than likely have to pull the windshield to cut/drill for the ducts.

I was holding my breath when you were cutting the hood! Glad it worked out. I'm in the same boat (no hood scoop) and good to see that tip. A dropped base bottom air cleaner or a aluminum flat base plate Ford used on the 66 427 Fairlane are options. But can compromise carb space a bit. Anyway keep up the good work!
-
Thanks. I'm probably taking longer than it should on the gaps and hood/trunk/door fitting, but I'm a novice, and would rather take time and not make mistakes.

Assuming I didn't miss something, which, let's face it, is possible, it is ready for 400 grit wet sanding.
-
what products are you using, Larry?
-
I really like Advantage 325 Hi Build Primer, because it builds nicely and is really easy to sand. Evercoat makes a budget filler that, honestly, is just as good as the stuff twice as expensive, called Z Grip. I also use Evercoat kitty Hair for the buildup on doors. Dura gold paper, and blocks. Getting the paint from Auto Paint HQ. They are in St Louis area, which is only a few hours away for me.
