Title: Adhesive for dash?
Post by: aarvig on December 08, 2019, 11:11:35 AM
What did you guys use for adhesive to attach the dash vinyl to the fiberglass?

Weldwood landau top adhesive works well. Made for sprayers but can also be brushed with a chip brush.
Or 3m high strength 90 spray can.

I used the 3M High Strength 90.  Make sure and spray both the dash and the vinyl.  Let the adhesive dry both sides before joining the two.  If you don't let it dry, it will leave a gooey film that will eventually let the vinyl separate from the dash.  I found out the hard way.  Had to remove the dash/gauges and recover with new vinyl.  And remove the gooey mess off the dash.

I used a pastry roller to roll out any bubbles or wrinkles.  Worked real well.

I also used super glue to roll the edges so they wouldn't come loose.  Used tongue depressors and a variety of clamps to secure the edges as shown in the attached picture.  I have a bunch of the red clamps so would do a good bit of the edge at a time.  Trimmed the vinyl after the glue had set.

The guys who do some of those beautiful street rod interiors use countertop adhesive. Ever try to peel up a piece of formica?  ;D

Thanks for the tips guys.  I ended up calling 3m and talked to one of their engineers in the adhesive department.  He told me either 3m 80 or 90.  I went with the 80 because it’s specifically for vinyl, plastic, and rubber.  We’ll have to compare notes Russ and see which works best.  I’m going to use your tongue depressor and clamp idea as well.
