Title: 2016 Texas Cobra Meet
Post by: Bob Worley on March 24, 2016, 09:45:37 PM
Its almost that time again!    The annual Texas Cobra Meet based in San Marcos, Texas is next week/weekend.  As of 03.20.16 we have 125 cars registered with a total of 213 drivers and guests.

Every year since as least 2012 our favorite replica builder company from Iowa, Hurricane Motorsports has made the trek down to Texas with their demo car and trailer and helped support this event.   This year will be no exception.

Once again we'll have a Hurricane Family Reunion around the HMS trailer each night, I'm sure.   Hurricane owners bringing their cobras are:  Ken Walker, John Shelton, Gregg Herdlitchka, Richard Parker, Nathan Parker, Mike Robbins, Steve Sinnard (HMS President). Owners coming with builds in progress are: Russ Rittimann, Bob Worley, George Daulton (Ohio Cobra Club).  If I missed anyone please forgive me.

Looking forward to seeing everyone again!  I'll try to post updates and pics here as I can.

I'm planning on bringing my car again this year for display.  It's of course still in progress.  Body is off so it will get scrutinized to the max.

See everyone in San Marcos.

Bob Worley? are you taking your car this year? Thought you were riding with Shelton again.

Next year that list should be longer and more finished cars (Russ)

Going through my pictures, I failed again ... my intent was to take more pictures of People than cars.. Did didn't get much of either. I guess we were having too much fun! anyway here goes :

John Shelton (HM-1038) and I left Dallas a day early, Tuesday 3/29 to beat the rain that was coming the next day.  We went down I-35 to San Antonio to visit his parents for a few days.

Loading up and leaving my house:

Cold and cloudy, but cozy

At Round Rock we bailed off the interstate to have some fun on Ranch Road 1431, a scenic twisty curvy two lane to Marble Falls. Here's some iPhone video:

Around Johnson City (hwy 281) the drizzle was getting heavy

John had a GoPro, with two mounting locations, on the roll bar and in the front opening right above the oil cooler.  Here is a test video as we were getting close to his parent's house in San Antonio:

Thursday morning after the rain broke we uncovered John's car and packed up again for short drive back to San Marcos. We wanted to get to the hotel in time to catch a group of cars that were making a quick jaunt over to Lockhart, Texas for one of their famous BBQ establishments.  We ended up at Kreuz where there is no sauce and no forks.   Pretty good stuff.

Passing through Lockhart and the Caldwell County Courthouse (seen in many movies and TV shows including most recently "The Leftovers")

Back in San Marcos, we headed to Gabriel's Liquor to load up on libations for the parking lot later that night.  (I passed on the Grand Patron)

No foolin'!   There were severe storms going around San Marcos with high winds and hail, so we watched the radar and the dark clouds going by, and waited some more.    Finally around noon we decided to make a short run down to New Braunfels / Gruene for lunch at the Grist Mill Restaurant on the Guadalupe River, then the obligatory run up River Road and around Canyon Lake.  Around Canyon, John noticed a clink the car and we pulled over to find a lose spinner and broken safety wire on the left rear wheel.   As luck would have it there was an auto shop right across the road where we pulled in and borrowed a floor jack.   The owner and wife told us that morning they had 6" of hail covering their lot. Good thing we waited it out.  We returned to the host hotel in time for the evening parking lot cookout.

Cobra parking starting to fill in, with the Ohio Cobra Club trailer with their raffle car in the foreground, and Hurricane's trailer in the background.

Back at the hotel, our friend George Thompson has brought out his $1Million plus original 427 Comp Cobra, CSX3020.  I love this car, and its how I'm building mine to look (but with full windshield)

Friday night is the parking lot tail gate cookout fundraiser.  A motley crew here : left to right Bob Worley (HM-2008), John Weatherly (hurricane wannabe), Russ Rittimann (HM-2005), Jason Kruse (Hurricane builder)

Here is an aerial shot on Saturday morning.  We tried to get a group.  I emphasize the word "tried."  It was worst that trying to herd cats!!!  Cobra owners live in a world of their own.

Okay there is the last update from the 2016 Spring Meet.  Lots of pictures and videos so here we go....

VIDEO: Saturday morning, lot full of cobras!

On Saturday, as Ken mentioned in the previous post we tried to wrangle everyone together for a group aerial drone shot.  So while that was going on the various factions where deciding which cruise route and destination to take.  James Yale and the Backdraft guys seemed to have a good plan so we went with that.     The map shows us leaving San Marcos and heading north through Wimberey and Driftwood to the Fall Creek Winery, then north to Dripping Springs and west to Opie's BBQ for lunch, then back south and west to Luckenbach, and finally a nice cruise back to the hotel in time for the Saturday night banquet.

Awesome job there Bobby, certainly looks like fun.

Is the headset's talk back and forth like motorcycles & pilots use? Do they work good?

yes, John got the comms device off amazon for $15 from China .. worked great!  earbud and mics running on AAA batteries.  Then we covered ears with shooting muffs from Bass Pro.  We even wired in music on the cruise down from Dallas.  Really made for a pleasant cruise all week.

Dear All,
I have been out of pocket for far too long... so long in fact that it was just easier to create a new user than resurrect the past. Bob's enthusiasm is infectious; my re-emergence on the Hurricane Forum is testament, so be wary of large doses or prolonged exposure to his enthusiasm.

Bob did a tremendous job in his reporting to you all who could not join us this year. We have a saying about the Texas Hill Country and the Trans-Pecos however; "they don't make a camera big enough to do it justice." Bob did his best and succeeded for those of you not having seen it in person.

So... we are all in agreement about 2017,
- sounds like Sam has a plan to make an appearance happen, he just has to make arrangements to bring his car,
- and Kurt can drive in from the Bikini's in North Austin daily (the girls sleep until about 4:00pm anyway, so plenty of time to cruise the hills before Showtime, errah', I mean Dinner),
- Mark and Matt, how about it? Start laying the groundwork now. I have unique memories of each and every year that I have attended, that I hope I never forget.

Thanks Bob, I didn't think it possible with the pain of Jay's absence, and I hate to say it, but 2016 was the best yet.
Pending weather, I say we extend to eight days next year.

Okay Gents,

I compiled three legs of Saturday's cruise as a POV video from the cockpit of HM1038. I am posting the Youtube link and hope you enjoy it. Bob and I were blessed with great weather, great company, and open roads.

The video is in 1080p and overdubbed in stereo, so prepare your browser and speakers. I hope you enjoy it.

Mark, Jason,

The Ford plastic speedo gear stripped out a little while back. I have gone through two now.
Happy to use the windshield mounted GPS module in the interim.

Besides, I can't be posting videos on the net from TCM with the speedo front and center.

On a related note, for those of you sorting out your drive-train options before taking the plunge, check out
