Many of you have inquired about all the new features and improvements being made to the Hurricane and I wanted to update you on the progress of the factory car. Here is a picture of the frame painted gloss black with the front and rear suspension and steering rack installed. I have also included a picture highlighting the newly developed floor mounted pedals which are significant improvement along with the angled flat steel foot box providing more foot room.
There are a number of other new features and improvements that will be highlighted during the build process. The modifications have taken longer than anticipated to finalize and implement but we are now into the production phase and things will be moving along quickly. Stay tuned.

That is so cool !!!
I want to mod my car now.
You guys are definitely rasing the bar.
By lowering the master cylinders they are going to be a bit farther away from the headers, I really like it.
Keep the pictures comming.
-
It's cool to see work is actively underway to improve an already solid design. Regarding the floor mounted pedals, I'd think
-
I have seen this thing up close and it is amazing. I don't think there is anyway that the masters could hit the ground even on a really big bump. We have talk alot about support bars here and there but at some point you just have to start building. I can't wait to see more pictures.
-
Goosebumps...

Thanks, Steve

Engine and trans to be mounted and headers will be built next. Making some progress.
To address a previous comment, the master cylinders sit just a little higher than the oil pan and bellhousing. So those would bottom out before the master cylinders would.
The body is covered in the background, painted and ready to mount. Will be unveiled very soon.

Looking good! Can't wait to see the completed car.

Love it! Can't wait to see Dean's with the independent rear suspension...
-
makes me want to buy another one!
(guess I should get my first one done though)

Glad to see things moving right along...makes me want to get back out in the garage and work, work, work.....
I'm still a bit concerned about a shear point between the arrows though...any thoughts ?
-
I love the floor mounted pedals. I also notice a change in the rear cowl support. Don't tell me you're gonna lose that artfully bent piece of 1x1 - you know, the one that was hand tooled by a blacksmith! ;D
BTW, have you found a new source for sidepipes other than Shell Valley/International Wholesale? I'm in the market for new side pipes.
Matt
-
There is no reason for concern with the shear points. It is gusseted and the material is very thick.
The new pipes are no longer slipfit. That was a pleasant change and they do have new sidepipes in stock. I had mine built with a 3 inch ID.
-
Dean, any idea how the new crew is producing headers? The original headers were pretty low-tech. Plus, for those of use running aluminum, oval port heads, it was a pretty crude set-up. I imagine a number of us will be looking for replacements at some point.
Dan
-
Dan, I think they are being made the same way. I saw the pictures of the new headers before they were fully welded and they looked ok. They use a 3/8's flange and pretty much weld them up. What problems have you experienced? As far as oval ports, I would think it would be as simple as using a different flange.
-
The build of HM-2001 continues to move along and the here some pictures of the progress including the headers being fit. Notice they have been changed to flange fit to provide a nice tight seal. Another improvement to the car with plenty more to come. I will keep the pictures coming.
-
I really like the new flanged connection between headers and side pipes, but wish you could find a new vendor for the side pipes. The way that our j-pipes are pinched to fit into the 4-way collector creates alot of back pressure. Below are ours and a set of SPF's.
-
Matt, The ones you show in the first picture were from the first supplier for Hurricane. They quit using them and went with ones like what's shown in your second picture (like the Superformance). I don't know the exact change over but it was before mine was built. I sure like the new flange though (a copy of the FFR).

These were just built. That is an old style collector that you posted pictures of. This is the current style and what is being used in production now.
-
Looking great Steve!
Now get back to work on mine! ;)
-
The engine is mounted and the cockpit tub is being installed.
-
Awesome Steve,
It really changes the engine comp look and I know mine will look cool with the aluminum firewall on top. Keep the pics coming......
-
Very nice! Style and finish quality is a great improvement. 8-)
Bill
-
The dash has been assembled and gauges installed. The e-brake has been mounted and installed. Work continues on both HM-2001 and HM-2002.
-
Made some progress with the steering and installed the new style aluminum heat shield today. This will really improve the look of the engine compartment when completed. The chassis has been taken off the cart and HM-2001 is now sitting on her billboards.
-
Looks like you also changed the upper control arm brackets to a different style?
-
You guys are really makin' some good progress - the headers look GREAT and the finish is amazing!
Keep up the good work!
:)
-
Hey Steve it's been over a week since you posted any pics of the new Factory car....you must have a few more to tease us with????
-
Believe me, its going to be worth the wait. It is the best paint job I have ever seen on a cobra, no sh!t!!!
-
Sorry for the delay with more pictures, but we are spending our time on Dean and HM-2002 right now. Check out Dean's build thread on Club Cobra for more pictures.
-
Steve,
The car looks awesome!! Keep up the good work. 8-) 8-)
-
any updates or pictures of the factory car now that HM2002 is out the door?
-
will have some posted early this week. We have made some great progress over the last few days. We installed the new carpet today
-
We are very pleased to announce that Dean Lampe's car has been delivered and he is very excited about his new Hurricane. He will be putting his personal touches on the car and will continue with updates on his Club Cobra build thread. Thanks to all who helped keep the energy level up on his thread. Last I checked he had over 13,000 hits.
Well we are back to work on the factory car and I wanted to post some updates. The body has been installed on the frame and the padding and carpeting is being installed. One item of note is the cutout by the e-brake to allow better clearance for gripping and also the approximately 1 inch gap left on the tunnel to allow the seem to fit evenly.
-
anyone address the issue for the spacing between clutch and brake pedals? it's to late for me, so i'll add a piece to favor the left side of the clutch pedal.
even with tenny shoes my narrow foot is still to wide.
i find it somewhat dangerous. i read where someone spaced master cylinders apart.
but i do not want to space them at this time because it's to involved at this time.

"One item of note is the cutout by the e-brake to allow better clearance for gripping"
Won't moving the ebrake over interfere with the passenger seat? It would also be a nice mod to angle the ebrake handle up to look more original like Paul and others did.
Matt
-
I think he meant that they cut out some of the padding next to the handle so it can be gripped easier.
I don't think they moved the handle.
Dan
-
ummm. . . never mind. :-[
-
The carpet is being installed and looks outstanding. Here are some updates. Yes, the padding was cut out by the e-brake for better gripping room, it was not relocated.
-
Very Nice, it's looking great. ;D
Question: Are you guys coming up with a better (more standard) method and procedure for installing the door sills?
This portion of the build is sort of "vague" and leaves it up to each builder to come up with their own solution.
It seems to me that 1) improved manual instructions, 2) and specific sill material in the kit will standardize the door sills and look more consistent for alll future Hurricanes.
There have been many excellent examples of sill construction on this site, perhaps one of those might be a good standard method.

Here are some shots of the completed trunk carpeting, windshield installation and the radiator.
-
Here are some shots of the new mechanical throttle linkage and the Gerling cans for the brake system.
-
Good choice in engine builders!
But I've since changed the valve covers.
Matt
-
We will be putting new valve covers on also, we just have not gotten to that yet. After putting the fresh air foot boxes in HM-2002 we decided to put them in the factory car too. Here are shots of the front fresh air ports. More to come on the fresh air foot box system.
-
Here is the fresh air hose from the front port flange attached to the blower fan and then through the fender.
-
We have completed installation of the fresh air foot box system. These photos show the cable controlled open/close paddle assembly mounted in the top of the foot boxes and hose running from those through the fenders. The control knobs on the dash are simply push/pull to open and close air flow. The blowers will be switched independently so you don't need to run the passenger fresh air when it is not necessary. I hope you like it. We plan on offering this upgrade on the new cars and to any of the current Hurricane owners who are interested.
-
The cutouts have been made and the new flange fit sidepipes and aluminum louvers have been installed.
-
Steve, any updates on the factory car?
Sam

-
The floor pedal assembly is complete and installed with the more original looking gas pedal and floor mounted brake and clutch pedals.
-
Here is the newly redesigned hinge with a much more period correct look and it is heavy duty enough to provide great stability for the doors.
-
HM-2001 is finished and has had a pretty good shakedown. The black with titanium stripes really turned out nice! Here are a couple of pictures of the completed car and we just loaded it in the Hurricane Trailer and are off to the London Show. Hope to see you there!
-
WOW!
The car looks terrific.....wish I could be at the show. Post pictures soon.
Bill ;D
-
:o :o That color combo looks great!! Can't be at london show just changed jobs and can't get any time off.
-
Car looks awesome, color is peela!

Hey Steve, it would be nice to see an Ad on Club Cobra side bar, kind of like the old Hurricane advertiserment. The ad is what brought Hurricane to my attention while doing my research for the best kit cobra around. I understand that "times are tough right now and advertisement is expensive", but getting the word out there and catching the future builder is the key to success. It's kind of like "fly paper", the information sticks with you while shopping.
Only a suggestion, good luck, Bill ;D
-
Here are some shots of the new mechanical throttle linkage and the Gerling cans for the brake system.
I don't see any pics. I am considering going to a mechanical throttle linkage and need all the help I can get. I have all the links to others' ideas and mods, like Paul's, but what does Hurricane have to offer? Is it easily installed as a mod to a first gen car? (1073)

I thought I had heard that the "factory car" was going through a bit of updating. How about some new pictures of it.
Mark

Also, some time ago I thought Dusty had indicated that he was going to build a new car for the Pres. (Mike) of Stanton Ind. Did that happen? If so, how about pics?
