Title: drive train
Post by: njperrone on August 06, 2007, 08:45:03 PM
Hi,

I'm new to the forum. I'm very close to buying a hurricane kit and wondered if anyone else has gone the route I'm concidering. I'm looking at purchasing a 460 from ford and running a Tremmec 5 speed and 350 rear gears. Anysuggestions or warnings about this directon? ANy clearance issues?

Also everything I see on the web looks great about the cars but I'm trying to find someone near me so I can check out the kit first hans I guess if I can't find anyone near I'll have to mske the trip out to the factory.

Thanks,
Nick

I haven't built a car yet, so perhaps I'm not qualified to render an opinion, but I'll give you my $0.02 anyway!

The 460 should not be a problem a friend  has a 429(same block as 460) in a shell valley and compairing it to the 4.6 mod the mod is got to be 2" wider at least and it fits no problem
If you call  mike he can tell you who else has put FE motors in and can hook you up with them or most likely answer the questions himself

you can build a nice 460/429 fairly cheap.there are plenty of performance parts out there for them also.a big block will make alot of torque at a lower rpm band than a stroker and thats what you feel by the seat of your pants.the small block strokers post about the same #s for hp and tq but they can be $$$ to build.a good 460 built right(nothing expensive)with a little head work and cam will be more power than your tires can handle.also none of the oil cunsumption problems that alot of the strokers are known for.guess you know by now that Im a big block guy :)

I have a junk van a 87 ford  with a 460 in it
It jumped the timing chain so I thought about using that instead of the mod motor But I told myself why go the easy route

Just adding my .02 worth, I have a 460+.060 in my 63 Merc and really did nothing out of the ordinary in the build: line bored, decked .020, iron heads exhaust ported and intake matched ( by myself ),Edelbrok intake and 750 carb, 2in primary hedders, flat top hyper pistons, approx 9.75-1 comp. Comp cams 270H kit, and all balanced, and I can roast the Goodyear Eagles way past 80mph in this big car, and runs on pump gas, it's a great street engine but thirsty, so it would be a fun engine in a Cobra.
Just my .02 Carl.

Thanks for all the input!

I just don't think I can do much better then the $6700 for a Ford Racing 460
550 HP at 6250 RPM and
545 ft./lbs. of torque at 4800 RPM. (with headers and 850 cfm carburetor not included)
10.5:1 compression ratio (nominal)
Forged steel connecting rods, M-6200-A75
Hydraulic flat tappet camshaft, M-6250-C460
High-performance T-sump oil pan
Front sump fits most passenger cars that came equipped with front sump pan
Rear sump fits most Fox body cars
MSD billet distributor
High-flow aluminum water pump, M-8501-C460
Ford Racing "Super Cobra Jet" aluminum heads, M-6049-SCJ with Ford Racing valve train

I thought about the small block but $/per HP is better with the big block and it's only about 150 pounds more. AND THE SOUND!!!!

Hope to be ordering soon. Thanks again!

Let me ask this - what does a 460 weigh with aluminum heads and intake?

Well...

Acording to the Ford Racing website (www.fordracing.com) the 460 with aluminum heads weighs in at 665# (with manifols and distibutor) vs a 302 with aluminum heads 543# and the 351 with aluminum heads weighs 605# . The prices aren't bad either.

Not sure what an FE weighs but dollar for dollar the 460 is a bargain!!!!

You guys w running big blocks, what  rear gears do you recomend? What ratio tremec trans did you go with? Did you guys upgrade the carpet like Hurricane suggests.

What about wipers, does your stae requir wiper to title the car?

Thanks all for the input! I should be ordering the kit next week.

Thanks,
Nick

Nick:
1.  Unless you're running a very mild motor, I'd recommend nothing taller than 3.27. With the weight of these cars and if you're running at least 350 or 400 hp, traction will be the issue.
2.  Highly recommend the .82 OD version of the Tremec. The wide ratio version with the .6-something OD would be good in a GT or Coupe where you could use it for top speed.  Remember, with the Cobra's sleek aerodynamics (like a brick) you won't want to be in the car above 120 of 130!  Many guys with the wide ratio complain that their cars lug in 5th anywhere below 80 mph.
3.  I bought the upgrade carpet. I looked at both at HM and didn't care for the standard carpet. It seemed more like a thick felt than actual carpet.
4. Don't know if Calif requires wipers or not, but I ordered them anyway.
Good luck and look forward to seeing you on the "dark side"
Matt

If you can get traction, the BBF might make a good street motor.
