Title: new member 1 week till ordering
Post by: cobraspit on February 24, 2007, 10:43:49 PM
been researching since november 2006, anyway my name is eric. my son and i are going for this project (kit building) a cobra.
i believe an oversized model we'll get to drive. hello to all, and i am going to ask a few questions, what is steering wheel hub size
or cross reference for adaptor for gt grant steering wheel (ie. ford, chevy? model, year?).
anyone using racing type seats momo, corbeau, recaro, sparco etc...
just thinking more for head rest comfort being roll bar would hurt if rear ended or snapping motion from torque.
how about quality stereo for when probably stop lights and parked to hear. enough room maybe for componet speakers, subwoofers, amps ect...
ive read alot especially here and i believe ive retained enough info we'll get by. dad is a mechanic iam general contractor,
my son has some auto shop experiance and i do know people in these fields but do not know any person thats done a cobra.
so i would like to thank everyone that has taken time to ask quetions here and espeacially those who answered them for i have
read every post at least once. Tire and Wheel size still is a problem for me i would like to use 17" rims  its the back spacing
iam confussed about. hurricane was my 3rd choice, era was 1, shellvalley 2 until i read in depth hurricane is the obvious choice.
thankyou and will post soon.

Welcome aboard Eric.  Once you get into the owner forums there is alot more info over there that will help you on the build. Where are you located?  We may have a few owners close to you .

As far as the seats and steering wheel.  I think everyone is using the stock ones that come with the kit.  Most of us are trying to keep with the original look of the car.  But I am sure other things will definately fit.  I mean the whole point is you are building the car for "you" so only your opinion matters on what you like :)

My car is finally going to be going to paint this week I hope.

Welcome Eric!
The father/son project is a great thing to do. My father spends time on my build as he has with every car I've built over the years. And I'm 42!
On the steering wheel, it may be VW spline on the steering shaft but I'm not sure. Mike Arps would probably know for sure. If it is, finding a hub will be easy. Like Dan says, most of us use the Moto Lita wheel that comes with the kit for originality but it's your car and you should build it the way you want.
As far as seats, I don't know if anyone has put high-back seats in one yet or not. I see lots of FFR's with them and I think the Hurricane has a little more room, especially with the new inner fender mod on the new cars. (ask Mike about that one also)
One thing you might want to consider is dual rollbars and headrests. I've seen a couple other replicas with a headrest pad attached to the rollbar.
Just a thought if the high-back doesn't work out.

What are your plans for engine/trans?
See you on the other side!
Larry

a thankyou goes out to dlowman and LMH for the response.
like to note i have read about the darkside will be looking foward to harnessing this force.
ah yes trani TREMEC 600, the engine damn can i type that ? like picking colors? your right i do what something a little differnt they are what we'll make them especially FAST.

anyway iam from concord, CA. 43 consecutive years breathing and waiting for a day to do something differnt than building houses.
but that's whats paying for my family and soon to be a dream come true i have a saying i use ,"lincoln logs, tinkertoys and legos i was born to build".

i always enjoyed the art of others (the tool and die man, the engineer, architect and the ones who supply the prouducts) so i can build and assemble to have something to admire form and function. always wanted to say that. took alot of people to get me where
im at and nothing short of being humble, anyway enough of that.

pops had 70 428 CJ Mach1 ill never forget, his freinds all had muscle cars my grand father had 69 roadrunner they always all talked
about the COBRA my dad still can't believe im ordering this kit he is in denial, but i would let him take her out anytime.
his only reponse was put in a 289 he'd had wished after the fact the mach1 was the Boss 302 he had done alot of road course in his day.
so with his help and others and including any and all on this site and the other side, sounds better than any vacation i can think of i'd
still have to come home with nothing to show for it, i'm funny that way. tools and my service in conta costa county is what i do best.

i really do appreciatie my first two welcomes and i really have read all forums, like ive been studying for a class, it has been fun and highly informative.
so for those who are thinking of HM look no further for what ive read and compared with, there is no other choice in my opinion and i could buy any kit out there(not that iam wealthy beyound any means but read and listen, and i kept comming back to this site where it seems no hype no pressurre and all of the fellow members are beyound helpful. ever get a good feeling?
didn't get this far without guts, prayer. and common sense. do the math, alot of after market parts to add on later to make it better
but i believe it sounds good also just basic price starting out to begin with.
so i'll be typn' later thankyou again.

Eric,   Sounds like your plans are right on!    I researched  this cobra replica market for two years and found that Hurricane is the best deal going right now. It's a complete kit for the most part, everything you need to get the car going. If you put a ford motor in it it will be worth more and be more authentic. One thing about the cobra you can be as creative as you want..its you build and its fun.

Welcome to the Hurricane Club,.... when you buy, you'll be placed on the Owners Forum and everyone is glad to help you with your build questions. the Forum is really fun and educational as well.

Best of luck,  Havasubill    ;D

Welcome Eric! Its sounds like you have some pretty cool plans for your car. Doing it with your son is fantastic. Its a great project for you two to do together, and will create memories that the both of you will cherish forever.

I think Mike Arps could answer the steering wheel hub size question. As for the seats, I think there are a bunch of different ones you could use. The cockpit is pretty roomy for a Cobra. I don't know of anyone in particular using seats other than what came with the kit but I'm sure you easily bolt in just about anything you wanted.

Mike

I would go with a big block.  It will remind you of your father every time you drive it.  You can get 390's pretty easily.

just saying hello,
i cant believe i was so right on about you guys. lots of questions later on the other side.just picked up funds for the job i finished that put me in over 50% down, left message today for Mike, anyway tues or wed to find out "wheres the money go" lol. trust me i still have to pour slab for this ride, mike said earlier 8 to 10 weeks so that gives me enough time. anyway who said big block, ford for sure engine its a toss up between 289 stroked or 408 w stroked or perhaps a big block, big bucks, big leaks? iam silly. just trying to figure out what all the details ive read about turn key engines trust me auto anything out in ca seems more pricey (talken the local shops)espeacially my area not complaining but i can recieve it seems thru engine factory, southern auto, kiethcraft and profo-unlimited for less with better componets any suggestions no rush it'll be while for that stage of the game.
hey anybody use hammer paint on less obvious areas ive used it many times on jobs and differnt applications on my work trucks,
just curious. anyway ill be typn' later and thanks to the new responses it is all so cool. ps its raining, sure glad i dont have the cobra yet, not.

just E.

If it's a 427 S/C, it's gotta be a FE. I took a 390, bored .030 then stroked with Scat kit to go to 431"

I am hung up on originality (within rea$on - I can't afford a $ide-oiler). The motor must be either an FE or a 289. Other options don't exist.

Eric, I'm with Jim. I'm running a 427w. Same cubes as a BB, same power (mabe more), less weight and more foot room!
IMHO, the increased foot room is probably the biggest advantage.

Keith Craft built me a 550hp stroked 408 from a 351w.  It's fuel injected now and has plenty of power.  It's light and it thumps hard with the big cam.  Gives me the feel of the big block without taking the room away from my feet.  Plus on the track it is going to be easier to move around.

An all new, 1965 replica aluminum Fe side oiler block, has the weight difference, and originality covered, for so many of those that are after those two attributes.

we all know if money spent with knowlagable intentions thus our gains will be greater, that said i could build something else
with the money saved toward the next project and still have double the fun. now stop with the bb and sb stuff because we'll use prouducts what ever they are as long as they are functioning and what can be afforded. with quality of course always costs.
i like the the bouts but differnt strokes no pun intented for well different folks corny but my point is are yall enjoying your selves
because sharing to me is the most rewarding point and thats what drives to all of our own opionions bb sb red blue are we having fun yet.
well ill here from yous later
typn' on the dark side soon.
can you see?

Jim,

The 65 side oiler re-pop, is cast in aluminum with date codes, by both Robert Pond Motorsports, and Genesis, although the Genesis blocks may be harder to get.  They are side oilers, and it was $1000 more for the aluminum, compared to their steel counterpart.  They are not original, but they are REAL.   ;D

There, I got that "REAL" one in there too.   [smiley=evil.gif]

I did a search on them. $8K for an Al. short block ain't too bad. I've owned many small & big blocks (all Chevrolet).  I don't want to get into a pizzing match as to which is best because there is no answer to that question. Each has it's own advantages and dis-advantages. However, that being said, I didn't want to put a BB in a 2300lb. that will get zero traction regardless of motor choice. :)

I agree, Paul.

If you've already lived with a 289, then ignore my advice.  My last Cobra had a 289 that pulled nicely up to (gulp) 9K RPM.  It was a SCREAMER at anything above 5K.  But it lacked ANY low end torque and thus, I found it not so much fun to drive around town.  The 4.56 gears helped, but it just wasn't a big block.  That's why THIS one has a 428FE!
