Guess I am the only "Purist" in the bunch

FE (390 bored 30 over, 4 1/8" stroker brings it to 431 - close enough that I can say it's a 427)
TKO600
3.55 IRS

I'm happy with a Southern Automotive FE390/406, wide ratio toploader, and 3.08 IRS.
I'm at the go-cart stage and the balance front to rear feels good.  Starting is no problem with torque and wide ratio trans with taller rear gear.  From start 3rd feels just like 1st, all GO!  I've had it to 70 in 4th at 2600rpm and it runs strong.

regards,
Chris

Same here, but mine shifts gears with a TKO600.  I've got 3.50 gears out back.

My engine is built by a racing engine builder It hits the dino in December. We will see what hp we get 400+  :o
Same size and style tire  w/ hilibrand wheels and stripes w/ pinstripes too

I also went with a SBF 351, TKO600, 3.5 gears.
Its 415 hp and it seems like more than enough HP.

Hey Chris,
I built my entire motor myself, from top to bottom. It should be above 425 HP. 347 Stroker w/ Alluminum Heads w/ 10:1 compression, Z-303 Cam, Hypertecnic Pistons, Roller Rockers, Roller lifters, Edelbrock intake and Carb. I'd like to get some more information on your motor to see how close they are built and also let me know how it did onthe Dino.
Thanks,
Phil

Guys,
Thanks for all the responses.  The TKO 600 looks like the most popular tranny out there.  I'm leaning that way with a possible Keith Craft 408 in front of it.  Sorry I didn't respond sooner, I have a 6 year old boy with Bronchitis.  Any recommendations where I sould shop for a TKO600 when I get ready to make that purchase?

Thanks,

Scott

Hi Scott,
Its probably best to call around and see who has the best price on the TKO when your ready to buy. At the time, D&D Performance had the best deal for me (Trans+Shipping). I called Keisler Engineering, Mike Forte, Dark Horse Performance, Brothers and a few others. They were all fairly close on price, but the shipping from D&D was quite a bit less than most of the others. The transmission is heavy so shipping charges could influence your total cost quite a bit.
Good Luck,

Mike

BTW- A 408 and TKO is an excellent combination. I think you'd be pleased.

Yeah, like Mike says, check around at what's closest to you. The shipping is what kills the price.

Scott,
I went with Jimi at Standard Transmission for my TKO. They put a shortened input shaft into the transmission for the same price others were selling the transmission for. That saves you having to buy a spacer plate. Did some research on the internet and then used Summit Racing's price match to get my Lakewood scattershield at a great deal.

Compare the different transmission suppliers. They all are about the same price for the transmission. The difference comes in the cost (sometimes items are included, N/C) of the accessories - Output yoke, input shaft, trans. mount, etc.

I end up with a transmission that bolts directly to the bellhousing that bolts directly to the block. No spacers or special hardware required, and saving about $200 in the process.

Hope this helps with your build

Paul

Mine is a FE 427 build I'm collecting parts for. I'll use a toploader and the 9" rear with the limited slip. Still need to order the kit but that will happen pretty soon. I'm narrowing down my choices on options tho.... ;D
