Title: Tools
Post by: Paul Proefrock on November 20, 2006, 10:40:13 AM
In the Hurricane build manual, they recommend a few special items that would kind of be peculiar to building the kit.

  1 7/8" Chrysler Balljoint Socket
  Taps - Book says 9/16" x 18 but I think they mean 5/8" x 18.

Did you find that you needed the taps?

Does anyone have these that they no longer need and want to sell?

Thanks

Paul

I think most people just used a large bench vise insead of a ball joint socket. I put them in the freezer for a day and they went in with no problem, I tightened them in a vise and then put a couple spot welds on them for good measure.
As far as the tap goes, yes you'll definately need one. They are about $10 at your local auto parts store.

As far as the tap, I did need one to clean out the residual junk from the tie-rod ends.  I bought a bottoming-tap in 5/8"-18 for that job.  IIRC,, I ordered it from Wholesale Tool, www.wttool.com for under $5.00.

Is the taps sole purpose the lower A frame, or is it also necessary for the upper tubes that make up the upper frame. I believe one end of those is LH thread. Do you also need a 5/8-18LH or is just the standard tap all you need

thanks

Lower A-Arms only and RH tap is all you'll need.

I chase everything with taps but you wouldn't have to. Like Jim says, the only one really needed is the lower A-arms.

Oh yeah, I used my bench vise to tighten the balljoints. I didn't have a socket that big and didn't want to buy one that I would only use once.
You might be able to borrow/rent one from a local auto parts store though if you needed it.
