Has anyone ever built their own aluminum tub and trunk. Im new here and must say Im really impressed with the Hurricane but Im not very crazy about the fiberglass inserts. I have spoken with Mike a few times and Im really impressed but Im afraid I may be driving him crazy with all the dumb questions.
Join the club. I'm pretty sure that Mike was contemplating blocking my number before I bought my car. I had a LOT of questions! In fact, it hasn't stopped. I had to call him again yesterday! ;D
I think Larry built an aluminum trunk liner for his brother's FFR. It's not rocket science, but I'm just going to carpet mine. I'm sure Larry will chime in whether I'm right or wrong.

IMHO I like the idea of the fiberglass body tub for a couple of reasons. I think the car will be much quieter with the fiberglass body tub. It won't transmit the road noise nearly as much as the aluminum. Also, it provides insulation from the engine heat. Fiberglass doesn't transfer heat very well. You'll find that aluminum panels would make for much hotter foot boxes and interior. And since the body tub easily fastens to the frame it makes your build much quicker and easier. Unless your going to go for a bare aluminum competition look for the interior, it would be covered with carpet anyway.
As for the trunk, the kit comes with carpeting for the that. But, I really like the look of the aluminum trunk panels though. I am thinking of making aluminum panels to line the trunk area. They will fit right over the fiberglass trunk liner. Here's a pic of the Hurricane #98 car. I plan on doing something similar on mine.

Same for me before I bought 1023. Mike's thoughts were probably something along the lines of "It's him again?!"
I didn't build the aluminum trunk for my brothers FFR as they come that way. I just spent hours riveting it! But it sure could be done w/o too much trouble, like the picture Mike posted shows.
I was planning on trying to duplicate the original SC trunk as best as I could when that point comes. I may not be using the fiberglass trunk tub or I may use parts of it and fab the rest. I'll have to see.
The cockpit tub being fiberglass doesn't bother me, it sure makes install much easier and it's covered with carpet. Even the original car has fiberglass (or is it plastic... I forget) footboxes.
Some, most or all (if you have the right tools) could be covered with aluminum if so desired though.
