General Questions / FE Junkies - Port Matching Exhaust

I spoke to Mike today about port matching the exhaust headers to the Edelbrock FE head. He told me he hadn't heard of any complaints or problems with them.

To those guys who have built Hurricanes's with FE's & Edelbrock heads, did you find much difference in the ports of the head to the header? Is  it something to be concerned about?

I am currently building my motor and am at the point of port matching my intake to the heads. If necessary, would like to do the exhaust at the same time.

In the Hurricane build manual, they recommend a few special items that would kind of be peculiar to building the kit.

   1 7/8" Chrysler Balljoint Socket
   Taps - Book says 9/16" x 18 but I think they mean 5/8" x 18.

Did you find that you needed the taps?

Does anyone have these that they no longer need and want to sell?



General Questions / Oil Filter adapters?

Can anyone tell me the oil filter adapter combination you used if you have a Hurricane with a FE motor.  I am trying to be as period correct as reasonable so wanted to remote mount the filter off the water pump.

Do you also run an oil cooler with your setup?  Pictures are great

Has anyone used a McLeod modular scattershield behind an FE Block in a Hurricane? I have a supplier wanting to use the McLeod pieces. I found a thread on Club Cobra claiming the McLeod wouldn't fit his Cobra but I am still working on what brand he had.

Since my preference is Hurricane, has anyone tried this combo? I did find pictures of a Lakewood behind an FE in a Hurricane kit so I know that combo appears to work.

Can anyone confirm the location of the upper radiator outlet on a Hurricane supplied radiator.

Looking at the pictures on the build site, it appears to the upper rt corner (passenger side)

Looking at the pictures on the Mfg website, I see it done both ways - upper rt and upper lt.

How is it supplied

makes a difference on the expansion tank on a FE engine



General Questions / More questions from a newbie - IRS or Straight

I am still researching the purchase of a Hurricane - having problems with a decision on the rear end.

Road Racers say IRS is the only way
Drag Racers say straight axle for strength
Cruisers say IRS gives better ride

But my pocket book says $2000 is still $2000

How much better ride will the IRS give? is it noticeable? Let's face it, the Cobra is not going to ride like a Lexus. And after 8 hrs on a road trip, you'll still want to stop by your friend the chiropractor.

Can anyone offer an input to help with the decision process.

I am doing my research on Cobra kits, Hurricane being at the top.

But I notice looking in the build pictures, there seems to be an in-ordinate amount of body work. I know it will be necessary to sand and smooth the  parting line seams. But some of the pictures look like they almost had to redo the entire body surface???

Can anyone expand on the amount of body work they experienced in their build.

It's been a long road but finally, HM1078 is ready for paint. I'd planned to drive her in primer for a couple months but when my painter called and offered a sweeter deal if I could bring it in now, didn't take long to make that decision.

Color will be white with blue stripe/red fender stripe

Looking to build a FE?

I've got a 390 Block w/ Crank. Appears to be in good shape, crank will clean up with 10/10 grind. Has not been previously ground. Block is original bore. Sorry, no pistons or rods. Block is 61 vintage.
